Ordinal Numbers – Números Ordinales

Si ya sabes contar en inglés con los números cardinales (one, two, three…), el siguiente paso es aprender los ordinal numbers o números ordinales. Estos no expresan cuántos hay, sino la posición u orden de algo en una serie: primero, segundo, tercero, etc.

Los números ordinales son muy comunes en inglés: se usan para hablar de fechas, posiciones, rankings, pisos de un edificio, competiciones, listas, y mucho más.

¿Qué son los números ordinales?

Los ordinal numbers (números ordinales) indican posición o secuencia, no cantidad.

– first → primero

– second → segundo

– third → tercero

🔹 Cardinal numbers = ¿cuántos? → I have two books. (Tengo dos libros)

Reglas de formación

.

1. Del 4 en adelante, generalmente se añade -th:

– 4 → fourth

– 6 → sixth

– 7 → seventh

2. Excepciones importantes:

– 1 → first

– 2 → second

– 3 → third

– 5 → fifth (se cambia la “ve” por “f”)

– 9 → ninth (se elimina la “e”)

– 12 → twelfth (la “ve” cambia a “f”)

3. Decenas y compuestos:

– 20 → twentieth

– 21 → twenty-first

– 32 → thirty-second

– 45 → forty-fifth

Usos principales de los ordinal numbers

1. Fechas

Los ordinales se usan para expresar los días del mes en inglés.

🔹Today is the first of May. → Hoy es primero de mayo.

🔹 My birthday is on the twenty-third of October. → Mi cumpleaños es el 23 de octubre.

👉 Siempre se usa el ordinal, nunca el cardinal.

En inglés británico y americano hay una diferencia:
